Catcalled in Vienna: Women Filmed Walk to Job Interview

A short walk through the centre of Vienna turned into a filmed confrontation. According to the video's own description, women on their way to a job interview were harassed on the street — and still made it to the appointment. The footage captures repeated demands to be left alone, and a stranger's insistence that he was standing in "free space".

A Walk Through the Historic Center

The video is shot selfie-style from a low angle. Behind the subjects, a Gothic cathedral tower rises on one side and a pale apartment block fills the other; a curved street lamp and a flat grey sky frame the street. Lettering on a building facade reads "HANSPL", a detail consistent with a central square in Vienna.

Frames alternate between two people. One is a man in a dark cap, with sunglasses pushed up onto it and a striped scarf over a dark jacket. The other is a woman with long hair, a black face mask and a black leather jacket. The same stretch of pavement and the same pale building appear behind both of them.

Text overlays sit over the frames, reproducing fragments of what was said. One caption reads "it's a free space". Another reads "I want to drink something with you", and a third asks, simply, "which way?". The spoken audio in the same stretch is heard a little differently, which is worth keeping in mind.

Refusing, Repeatedly

In the audio, the woman does not engage. She asks the man to go away, says she does not want to talk to him, and repeats the request several times. He answers that she is a beautiful girl and asks where she is from.

I'm asking you to leave or I will call the police, okay?

The exchange runs in short loops rather than building to anything. She asks him to leave. He stays and speaks again. She says she will call the police. He tells her the space is free and that she should go somewhere else. The recording ends with a blunt demand that he go away.

Fragments of the back-and-forth, as heard:

  • A request to be left alone, repeated several times
  • A remark that she is a beautiful girl, and a question about where she is from
  • A line about drinking something together
  • A warning that police will be called

Still Made It to the Interview

The description posted with the video says the women were harassed on their way to a job interview and still managed to get to the job. That claim comes from the uploader; no interview location, employer or time appears on screen.

What the footage does show is an ordinary route, a walk through a city centre, interrupted by a stranger who does not move on. According to a witness, the request to be left alone was made more than once before anything else changed in the scene.

The uploader's hashtags, among them #catcallingisnotokay and #catcallsofvienna, place the clip inside a wider conversation about street harassment and how quickly a routine errand can be disrupted.

Attention Online, Few Answers

The clip was posted publicly with no police report, no arrest and no statement from authorities attached to it. No official conclusion has been offered, and the people involved have not been publicly identified.

It was a situation no one saw coming, and it left many questions: what was said before the recording started, how long the exchange lasted, and why the on-screen captions and the spoken lines do not line up exactly.

Because the video is edited and filmed on the participants' own phones, some details remain unclear. It is not visible when it was recorded, who filmed which part, or whether every line of the conversation is complete. Even so, the pattern is hard to miss: one person asking again and again to be left alone, and one person refusing to move.

What would you do if a stranger refused to leave you alone on your way to a job interview?
